Christmas in Venice 2023

Lights, garlands and decorated trees to welcome the most anticipated event of the year! Kicking off the event is the lighting of the illuminations, starting on 21 November, the day of the Festa della Salute.

The illuminations in the historic centre of Venice see the Venice City Council, Vela Spa, the Venice Rovigo Chamber of Commerce and the Prosecco DOC Consortium working together to support those who live in and visit the city during the festivities. In addition, American Express - once again the sponsor of the illuminations in the Piazzale Roma and Lista di Spagna areas - supports the Venetian commercial fabric in particular. In the historic city centre, the warmth of Christmas will be characterised by illuminations on the islands of the Lagoon, from Lido to Pellestrina, from Murano to Burano up to Sant'Erasmo and Vignole, to light up every community in the Venice area. The Procuratie Vecchie will instead be illuminated thanks to the 'Murano Illumina il mondo' project, in collaboration with The Venice Glass Week.

An almost continuous flow of lights - also in the islands of the Lagoon, from Lido to Pellestrina, from Murano to Burano up to Sant'Erasmo and Vignole - to illuminate every community in the Venetian territory. Great attention will be paid, also this year, to respecting the environment, limiting its impact and consumption through a precise plan of switching on and off dates of the illuminations in time slots and with the total use of lamps with low-consumption LED technologies.

On November 24th at 4.30 p.m. it will be the turn of the tree in St Mark's Square, while on December 2nd the Venice ice skating rink will also be inaugurated. Click here to find out more

Culture
Christmas 2023 also brings to Venice opportunities to discover the city's rich cultural heritage, with all the museums open during the Christmas holidays, starting with the recently acquired collections such as the extraordinary Gemma De Angelis Testa donation to the Gallery of Modern Art at Ca' Pesaro, or the recent re-installation of the Mariano Fortuny collections in the homonymous Palazzo, as well as temporary exhibitions including "Marcel Duchamp and the seduction of the copy" at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (until 18 March 2024), and "Chagall. The Colour of Dreams" at the Candiani Cultural Centre in Mestre (until 13 February 2024). And again, at the Glass Museum "One hundred years of glass. NasonMoretti: history of a Murano family", and "Murano: Upcycling Glass" (until 6 January). At Ca' Rezzonico, the Museo del 700 veneziano, you can admire Rosalba Carriera's ivory miniatures until 9 January, while the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Ca' Pesaro hosts the exhibition "Il ritratto veneziano dell'Ottocento" (until 1 April 2024), which reproposes the exhibition curated in 1923 by the Gallery's director at the time, Nino Barbantini.
