Acque e terre, dipinti e land-art

On the occasion of the 1600th Anniversary of the Foundation of Venice, Venice International University is proud to present the work of Ettore de Conciliis with a homage to the City: the exhibition "Acque e Terre" ("Water and Land").

The Exhibition will be opened on September 20, 2021 at 2.30 pm, by President of VIU, Amb. Umberto Vattani, and Lorenzo Zichichi, il Cigno GG Edizioni, with the participation of the Italian Minister of Universities and Research, Prof. Maria Cristina Messa.

This works will be exhibited in the halls of the Island of San Servolo, which has, over the years, turned into a true art hub. Students, Professors, citizens of Venice and all those who have the good fortune of visiting San Servolo can enjoy also the Sculpture Park and the many exhibitions that take place on the island.

The universe portrayed by de Conciliis is an aquatic world that brings not just various moments during the day and night before our very eyes, but also those belonging to different seasons: ranging from the melancholy of Autumn, the transparency of Winter, to the explosion of Summer. His brushstroke upon the canvas is a delicate one, rigorously confined by the limits of water, a stroke that is never left unto the causality of gesture. For the painter, the recurrent theme is not the river or the lagoon, but the reflection of nature in the mirror of water. The landscape, once removed from a direct representation, remains unknown and difficult to read; it become cryptic, mysterious. A strong tension exists between that which the artist wishes to show us and that which he removes before our very sight. The objective pursued is the revelation of the profundity of the submersed material. The final image is the result of having searched deep within one’s own sensibility, with the intention of giving life to an intimist vision that manifests itself with swathes of light produced with refined and di- screet hues to the onlooker. The artist creates an imaginary world of faint and suffused colours, which release a myriad of emotions. All of this is perceptible to our senses if one follows the traced lines, similarly to when one listens to music in the background.

The paintings exhibited on San Servolo are evocative and touching, and display an unparalleled delicacy. A feeling of zero gravity, lightness and profound stillness can be felt in some of them. Luminous effects that reveal the sensibility of an artist attracted to the immersion of a sea of light pour from his brush. The narration from Ettore de Conciliis’ works is one of memory. The composition of images and their sequence impact decisively on the stunned and amazed visitor who find themselves in front of unexpected representations of an aquatic world.

Among the works exhibited on San Servolo, one is dedicated to our city to celebrate the 1600th Anniversary of its Foundation. It portrays a nocturnal scene observed by the artist with San Servolo in mind, a homage to Venice that receives our admiration and deserves our applause. A faraway view of the city before leaving, with the moving desire to return.
