EMBROIDERY CULTURE AND THE ELEGANCE OF SHANGHAI SILK

旗袍QIPAO "EMBROIDERY CULTURE AND THE ELEGANCE OF SHANGHAI SILK"

On the occasion of the first month of celebrating China Eastern Airlines' direct Venice-Shanghai flight and the Venice Marathon "Marco Polo Cup," the Cultural Association "Le Nuove Vie di Marco Polo," one of the founding members of the National Committee for the 700th-anniversary celebrations of Marco Polo's death, has invited the Shanghai Qipao Culture Promotion Association for an official visit to further promote Sino-Italian cultural and commercial exchange. The visit will take place from October 24 to 27 in Venice and the Veneto region. During the visit, various initiatives will take place, including the participation of a group of young Shanghai businesswomen in the Venice Marathon, which will be exceptionally enriched by the "Marco Polo Cup" as well as an event promoting Qipao culture titled "Threads of the Orient in Venice: The Elegance of Shanghai."

"Threads of the Orient in Venice: The Elegance of Shanghai" is part of the broader cycle of events "The Knowledge of Marco Polo for the Preservation of Craft and Culinary Traditions of Excellence" approved by the National Committee and carried out through a multi-phase program throughout 2024. Following the exhibition held on October 3rd within the Salone dell'Alto Artigianato Italiano at the Venice Arsenal, which showcased exquisitely crafted objects made by master artisans from various Chinese cities once governed and described by Marco Polo, on October 25th (the day celebrating the first month of the direct Shanghai/Venice flight), a presentation of 30 handmade embroidered silk Qipao dresses will take place at the NH Collection Venezia Grand Hotel Palazzo dei Dogi. The Qipao is, par excellence, the traditional Chinese women's dress, an elegant garment sewn by tailors using fine silks and reinvented with modern and creative touches. This is part of a cultural and economic mission of Shanghai businesswomen, who have sponsored this initiative, aligning perfectly with the ongoing journey of knowledge through the rediscovery of intangible heritage and traditional craftsmanship, albeit through contemporary creative reinterpretation.

Entry by invitation only.
