Venezia nei documenti e nelle opere dell'Archivio di Stato di Verona

Archivio di Stato di Verona

Temporary exhibitionMultimedia production

This 2-part video focuses on documents and works of art on Venice and its relationships with the mainland.

The first chapter is based on reproductions of parchment documents and land-water views, covering a period that spans from the twelfth century to the fourteenth century in which the trading policies of Venice in the Po-Veneto hinterland are illustrated, therefore documents relating to duties and tolls, the control of both arterial land and river traffic (the Adige and Po Rivers and Rialto market). A good look is taken at the peace agreement of 1339, which drastically downsizes the ambitions of the Scaligeri lords with regard to Venice. Of the various documents is a special extremely long report that measures three metres in length, dated 18 September 1367, which certifies the popular imprint of the city’s municipal assembly, albeit in a stately regime, since, upon approval also of the doge, the complaints made by the merchants of Verona regarding the collection of taxes are accepted. These strategies were determined, above all but not only, by the lagoon city’s procurement needs, which had reached an urbanization rate of 100,0000 -120,000 inhabitants compared to the 30,000-35,000 of Verona and Padua.

The second chapter of the video draws on the historical and artistic heritage preserved in the Rame Fo Archive. From autograph manuscripts, audio-video documents of interviews and performances, an iconographic set of paintings and images, focusing on aspects of language, culture, arts and crafts of the city of Venice to which Nobel prize-winner Dario Fo also paid tribute many times in his works. The city of Venice is one of the important chapters of the cultural production of the artistic duo, Dario Fo and Franca Rame. This wealth of cultural assets between the State Archives of Verona and the Rame Fo Archive has suggested an approach for enhancement that combines scientific rigour and artistic dissemination and creativity.
