Rossini’s first opera, the one-act farce La cambiale di matrimonio (The Bill of Marriage), premiered in 1810 at Venice’s Teatro San Moisè. Composed in a few days when he was 18 years old, it already contains all the elements that soon would take the music world by storm: rich melodic invention, ingenious connections between sung lines and orchestral accompaniment, and breathtaking ensembles that generate irrepressible laughter in the audience.
The plot features a Canadian businessman called Slook who comes to London for trade and for marriage. But his contracted spouse Fanny, his partner’s daughter, is already secretly engaged with the young clerk Edoardo; thus, after various funny incidents, Slook sails back towards the New World disgusted with Europe’s strange customs.
