Scala Contarini del Bovolo

Venezia, San Marco 4299 Corte Contarini del Bovolo 30124 Venezia
VE

Secluded in a small courtyard at the end of a narrow side line set perpendicular to Campo Manin, the Scala Contarini del Bovolo can be admired in all of its extraordinary elegance. It numbers among the most unusual examples of Venetian architecture in the transitional period from the Gothic style, deep-rooted in local tradition, to the emerging Renaissance. A series of overlapping loggias connects the various levels to the exterior staircase that unwinds in a snail shape - "bovolo" in Venetian dialect - inside a cylindrical tower decorated by an intricate fretwork of ascending archways.
