Venice and Asian Waterscapes in Dialogue

WATER-WAYS WORKSHOP
Venice and Asian Waterscapes in Dialogue: Exploring Connections, Global Challenges and River Futures

Inspired by Marco Polo's pioneering role in pursuing cross-cultural encounters between the East and the West, the main goal of the WATER-WAYS 2024 workshop is to explore connections and global challenges between the Venice lagoon and its inland landscape and the various watery landscapes of Central Asia, China, Japan, South-East Asia, and India.

The WATER-WAYS workshop focuses on water landscapes as "loci of habitation” and “paths of exploration" from a historical, geographical, political and sociocultural perspective. It recognizes, respects and explores multiple “ways of water” as "modes of being” and accounts of the materiality and meanings of water bodies (rivers, streams, canals, lakes, dumps, wetlands, etc.) as reflections upon multiple relationships with networks of human and non-human factors. To achieve this, the WATER-WAYS workshop seeks to foster transdisciplinary dialogue among researchers and practitioners who share an interest in place-based understandings, meanings and agency of waterbodies.
