VE

The island is very ancient.  From the underground emerge remains of a Roman association with the The finds, fourth and fifth century A.D. The name is of popular origin, dates from the first half of '400, when the island was abandoned for over twenty years due to the unhealthiness of the lagoon. The Franciscan story begins in 1220: returning from 'East Saint Francis landed there with an anonymous companion, greeted by festive song of the swallows (the story of the miracle is narrated by St. Bonaventure in the Legenda Maior). In March 1233, the island was donated to the Order by Jacopo Michiel, the doge's branch of the family and grandson, for the wife, the patriarch of Grado Angelo Barozzi: at the time of the donation there existed two churches, one dedicated to the saint.
