La Fenice Opera House new production
with Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello di Venezia
With clear references to Ariosto, even though in the form of parody, and with a faint echo in the tone of the language to Goldoni’s Mondo alla roversa, this gem from the eighteenth-century repertoire that was rediscovered at La Fenice Opera House is really full of surprises: from the incipit with its futuristic illustration of a ‘space ship’ and a visit to the ‘museum of all the virtues that have been lost by terrestrials’, to a finale in which the two comic actors Frasia and Lesbina agree to a bigamous marriage with the duca della Luna Astolfo, while their brothers and sisters, fresh Argonauts, decide to leave the satellite and set out in search of other worlds: it does not matter what happens, as long as they do not come back to earth, the true kingdom of insane, in which commerce, wars and fake knowledge are the real enemies. When the Bari born composer wrote Il regno della luna for Teatro di Milano in 1770, his fame was at its height and his operas a point of reference.
