Venezia porta d'Oriente
CONSERVATORIO DI MUSICA BENEDETTO MARCELLO DI VENEZIA
On the 1600th anniversary of the foundation of the City of Venice, it was decided to combine the centenary of the birth of the great poet Andrea Zanzotto, choosing as the cornerstone of the Project the figure of Giacomo Casanova, a significant symbol and representative citizen of Venice. As is well known, Federico Fellini's film on Casanova, with poetic texts by Andrea Zanzotto, is an important reference, from various points of view, and consequently the musical work of Nino Rota as author of the soundtrack.
"Venice: the gateway to the East" means getting down to the roots of the phenomenon of the most ancient modes, of the "musical scale", from the time of Ptolemy of Alexandria (II century AD) up to the dawn of tonality in the West on the one hand, and the plethora of "maqam" modals in the East on the other, at around the same time; and of course, going from Alexandria of Egypt to Aquileia, from Milan to Benevento, from Constantinople to Venice ... and vice versa. The lessons, held by M Aleksandar Karlic are divided into theoretical and practical lessons, focussing on the historical, technical, stylistic aspects of Anatolian, Middle Eastern and Balkan music. Melody and rhythm will be studied in-depth, as well as complex and fundamental aspects of musical languages that have never known that typical concept of “harmony” of the Western model. Special emphasis will be placed on documented or hypothesized connections with the ancient Western practices. The idea of the project is to hold one or several concerts at the end of the course, in which European medieval music and music of Ottoman/Byzantine and Persian culture will be presented, re-proposing an itinerary of the Silk Road from Venice to Samarkand.
The concert will be on the 29th of May 2021.
The conferences will be on Saturday the 10th and the 24th of April, the 8th, the 22nd of May 2021.
