Abandoned by the Augustinians in 1419, from 1424 the island hosted the Carthusian Fathers of Florence who restored the buildings and added new buildings including 15 cells organized around a cloister. also they rebuilt the church, which was adorned with works of several masters including Tintoretto.
The rebirth of the island of Certosa was launched in 1985 with the creation of the "Certosa Committee" mobilized to protect the island from decay and retrieve it as Urban Park.
