Brescia in the Republic of Venice of the seventeenth century

On the 1600th anniversary of the foundation of Venice, the University of Sciences, Letters and Arts of Brescia intends to promote an afternoon of studies on a historical period that has been particularly neglected by historiography in relation to the Venetian domination of Brescia (1426-1797): the seventeenth century. In the last thirty years, very little has been dedicated to seventeenth-century Brescia, since a deep and useful reflection on Venice and its dominion in Lombardy favoured by the work of Gaetano Cozzi, in Venice, and related scholars concerning the University of Brescia who edited the third volume of the History of Brescia (1964) promoted by Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri. For this reason, the University of Brescia wants to bring attention back to a historical phase pending updated studies on the one hand and, on the other, to account for the insights that have been conducted by scholars in recent years. The topics that will be touched upon by the conference initiative will be: the political and military history, the history of aristocracies, trade and finance history, cultural and literary history and finally the history of sculpture and minor arts. The results of the study afternoon will be published in the journal of the University of Brescia in 2022, or in the "Commentari dell’Ateneo di Brescia", a scientific journal recognized by ANVUR for the scientific-humanities disciplinary sectors. The special issue will be edited by the academic members, Luciano Faverzani and Enrico Valseriati, and will be made available to the public in open access format on the University website (www.ateneo.brescia.it).
