Everybody Talks About the Weather

Topics:

"Everybody Talks About the Weather" is a research exhibition conceived by the curator Dieter Roelstraete and presented by Fondazione Prada in Venice, in the spaces of the historic palace Ca' Corner della Regina, from May 20 to November 26, 2023.

"Everybody Talks About the Weather" explores the meanings of meteorological time in visual art, considering weather conditions as a premise to address the ongoing issue of the climate emergency. More than fifty works by contemporary artists and a complementary selection of historical works trace the various ways in which climate and weather have shaped our cultural identities and how humanity has faced our daily exposure to meteorological events. The exhibition, designed by the New York-based studio 2x4, will intertwine the artistic dimension of the project with a series of scientific insights developed in collaboration with the New Institute Centre For Environmental Humanities (NICHE) at Ca' Foscari University of Venice.

Following the exhibitions "Human Brains: It Begins with an Idea," presented in Venice in 2022, and "Anatomical Brains: La Specola di Firenze | David Cronenberg," currently ongoing in Milan, this project represents a further attempt to address broad cultural challenges with the integrated tools of science and artistic creation: from the evolution of the study of human thought to the changing meanings of bodies in our societies, to the looming climate crisis. Through these activities, Fondazione Prada aims to disseminate new knowledge and share with a wide audience the latest results of academic and scientific research. It also aims to create connections between distant cultural contexts, identify new paths of study, and thus contribute to expanding the perspective with which we examine cultural trends of our present and future. The title of the exhibition derives from the slogan "Alle reden vom Wetter. Wir nicht" (Everyone talks about the weather. We don't), reproduced in a poster created in 1968 by the Sozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund (Socialist German Student Union) depicting Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin. In 2019, the German artist Anne-Christine Klarmann created a new version of the poster featuring Judith Ellens, Carola Rackete, and Greta Thunberg and modifying the original slogan to: "Alle reden vom Wetter. Wir auch" (Everyone talks about the weather. We do too).
