Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation - San Marco Gallery
The Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation arose from a will and testament by Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua, widow of General La Masa, who bequeathed Ca’ Pesaro, her palace on the Canal Grande, to the city of Venice "for the benefit of young artists in particular, who are often barred from participating in large exhibitions". Ca’ Pesaro was the initial seat of the "Opera Bevilacqua La Masa", subsequently moving to the International Gallery of Modern Art. Today the Foundation’s main exhibition space is in Saint Mark's Square, under the Procuratie Nuove porticoes. The gallery is laid out over six rooms on two floors. After the 1999 celebration of its centennial, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation Gallery has hosted exhibitions by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Beuys, Milton Glaser, Shirin Neshat, Frida Kahlo, Sonia Delaunay, Alex Katz, Grazia Toderi, Roni Horn, and the critic Giuseppe Marchiori, as well as an exploration of the state of painting at the beginning of the millennium. The most important annual event on the Foundation’s calendar is the Collettiva Exhibition which presents selected works by young artists from the Triveneto region.
How to get there
The San Marco gallery is centrally located in the heart of the city. It can be easily reached by passing through the crowds of tourists and arriving at the corner of the Procuratie Nuove 71/c.
If arriving by boat, the closest water bus stops are San Marco - Vallaresso or San Zaccaria (Line 1 and 82).
If arriving on foot: from the Rail Station follow Strada Nuova, through Rialto, San Salvador and the Mercerie; or take the route through Santa Margherita, San Barnaba, l'Accademia, San Moisè and finally San Marco.
