The history of Venice told through the fashion of its prominent figures

the history of Venice told through twenty costumes from Caterina Cornaro to Queen Margherita, fashion takes shape thanks to the fine work of Francesco Briggi and speaks about Venice.

Fashion is constantly evolving; its journey through the customs and traditions of populations never ends, and it is always telling new stories! After a year spent in the private apartments of Palazzo Nani Bernardo, the "Stories of Fashion" exhibition takes on a new look in the halls of the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista. Atelier Pietro Longhi and Scuola Grande have a long-standing partnership; in fact, in 2005 the first and only philological reproduction of the entire Venetian Doge cortege was displayed in the great capitulary hall. Today, after thirteen years, fashion returns to the place that symbolises Venetian culture thanks to the help of the Guardian Grande, Antonio Cecchini, and director, Cristina Scarpa, who have embraced the project by Atelier Pietro Longhi to tell the story of the most representative building in the history of Venetian architecture and art through fashion.

Curated by Raffaele Dessì and entirely based on years of research and experience by tailor and craftsman, Francesco Briggi, a completely renewed version of the “Stories of Fashion” exhibition has found its place at the Guarana hall of the Scuola Grande San Giovanni.

With the reproductions of a fourteenth-century Salome and a crusader in armour, Queen Cornaro will be the first figure to represent the bond between art, fashion and the Scuola Grande. The magnificence of Venice is told thanks to the costumes made by Francesco Briggi, the velvets and silk damasks and gold and silver threads used, and the knights and ladies painted by Veronese and Titian. However, it also tells of the depression: the Napoleonic and Austrian dominion are portrayed in all their power by their austere and dark clothes, to then return to a galaxy of lace and colours of a Renaissance Venice that regained its identity.

The emotions that describe these items of clothing do not belong to history alone: they are also the gowns worn by the Marias when they are presented in St. Mark’s Square on the last day of carnival, or those worn for shows and re-enactments that Atelier Pietro Longhi exports throughout the world along with the Venetian culture. They tell of the craftsmen’s ability to work together in the quest for perfection, such as that of the eighteenth-century gown that, in addition to Francesco Briggi and Rubelli, sees the fine work of Marisa Convento who decorated the bodice and the lace maker who made the sleeves and flares. The stories told by fashion are infinite, because the passion behind the fashion designers and producers is infinite.

The exhibition will be open during the same opening times as the Museum of the Scuola Grande. The cost of the visit to the “Stories of Fashion” (Storie di Moda) exhibition is € 8.00 while the visit to the entire monumental complex and the exhibition is € 15.00.

On Fridays, a guided tour of the exhibition, which is included in the price, can be booked, while during the week, a detailed description of each item of clothing is available.
