The name Carpenedo whispers of ancient times, harking back to the white hornbeam woodlands that once flourished here as far back as the 14th century. Today, the Bosco di Carpenedo stands as the last surviving fragment of that primeval landscape — a precious natural relic that has endured through the centuries.

In the 1980s, when plans emerged to build a new hospital on its grounds, this forest became the rallying point for a passionate environmental movement determined to safeguard nature and revive Mestre’s identity as a città del bosco — a “city of the woods”.

Now protected under the European Union as a Site of Community Interest (SCI), Carpenedo Wood shelters rare and remarkably diverse habitats. Among its highlights are the mixed lowland forest — home to oaks that established themselves here after the last Ice Age — and flourishing mesophilic meadows. Thanks to its rich birdlife, the forest has also been designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and is part of the Natura 2000 network.

Covering around 10 hectares, the Bosco di Carpenedo encompasses four distinct environments:

the historic woodland, a remnant of the ancient oak-hornbeam forest that once blanketed the Venetian hinterland;
newly planted woodlands, established between 1990 and 1999;
permanent meadows, a living trace of the region’s traditional agricultural landscape;
wetland areas, including low-lying grassy hollows and drainage ditches that offer refuge to a wealth of wildlife.

Adjacent to the forest lies an additional three-hectare area, owned by the Province of Venice and reforested in the late 1990s.

A network of walking trails weaves through the site, inviting visitors to explore its diverse plant life, with rest stops perfect for observing hedgerows, meadows, and wetlands. The mesophilic meadows — a fragile, protected habitat — remain strictly off-limits to foot traffic but can be admired from surrounding perimeter paths.

Facilities include several entrances, internal trails, rest areas, and an educational route. A dedicated car park on Via del Boschetto makes access easy for visitors.

To protect the delicate balance of this natural treasure, Bosco di Carpenedo is entirely fenced and open to the public only on weekends during spring and autumn.
