Scuola Grande di S. Giovanni Evangelista

Campiello della Scuola, San Polo 2454
30125 Venice VE

The Scuola Grande di S. Giovanni Evangelista is the second oldest of the Grandi Scuole active in Venice (it was founded in 1261), before it was deconsecrated by Napoleonic decree (1806). Rescued from destruction by well-meaning Venetians, it became the seat of the Society for the Building Arts in 1857. Converted to an Arch-confraternity in 1929, it still carries out its social and spiritual role. The building where it stands was completed in a floral Gothic style (mid-1400s) but still shows the vestiges of its 14th-century beginnings. The art of the Renaissance embellished the building with invaluable works of architectonic beauty such as its exterior Atrium and the "Marble partition" by P. Lombardo; the great entrance door on the side of the building with its double lancet window (attributed to M. Codussi); and the grand staircase, a transcendent and harmonious creation by M. Codussi. Adorning its halls are paintings by D. Tintoretto, Palma the Younger, and D. Tiepolo in addition to other masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. The celebrated painting cycle of the large canvases painted for the Oratory of the Scuola by G. Bellini, V. Carpaccio, L. Bastiani and G. Mansueti, with the miracles of the relics of the cross, is presently held in the Accademia Galleries.
