Piazza Ferretto
It was once called Piazza Grande or Maggiore, when it was still the heart of the Mestre market, held twice a week. The market is still a twice-weekly event, only now in another location. In 1900, it was named in memory of King Umberto I of Savoy, who was assassinated in that year in Monza. After the Second World War and the exile of the Savoys, it was rededicated to the memory of freedom fighter, Erminio Ferretto, slain by the Fascists in 1944.During the excavation, many relics were unearthed relating to the works for creating the 19th-century sewer system, road strata in cobble stone from a more recent period and even sections of city walls from the medieval times. The square was then covered back over with sheets and slabs of basalt and zovonite; in the middle of the square is a large fountain, at the centre of which was a gilded bronze statue by Alberto Viani (1906 - 1989).
