Panoramic Venice. The discovery of the narrow horizon.

Fondazione Querini Stampalia

The exhibition revolves around the largest views of Venice ever made, painted in the 1880s by the Venetian painter and decorator, Giovanni Biasin. It is a work of art of just over one and a half metres in height and almost twenty-two metres in length depicting a 360° view of Venice from a special angle, that is from the water level, on a boat in St. Mark’s basin. Alongside the masterpiece preserved today in the collections of the historic Accademia dei Concordi in Rovigo, other interesting perspective views will be exhibited from public and private collections that will describe the architecture of Venice from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The fashion and passion for panoramic views had spread to Europe in the nineteenth century. They were mounted inside large cylinders like circus tents, or purpose-built structures. The public could enter for a fee to see shows that included lighting effects. With ingenious mechanisms we managed to create the effect of navigating by moving the visitors’ stands to create scenes of panic or seasickness. With a brief historical digression to reach our current day and age, the panoramic views on display will witness to the fortune of a genre and will reveal to the public little-known or even unknown works.  A volume on Venetian panoramas published by Lineadacqua edited by Giandomenico Romanelli and Pascaline Vatin will be presented with unpublished critical texts and images of the works on display. During the period of the exhibition, conferences and concerts open to the public will be promoted, offering insights into Venice and enriching the representation of the city with music. The project will be brought to Moscow in the autumn of 2021, thanks to a collaboration between the Querini Stampalia Foundation, the Italian Cultural Institute in Moscow and the Shchusev Museum of Architecture in Moscow.
