DOMUS GRIMANI. The collection of classical sculptures in the palace after four centuries. LA SALA DEL DOGE

Palazzo Grimani Museum

DOMUS GRIMANI. The collection of classical sculptures in the palace after four centuries. LA SALA DEL DOGE curated by: Toto Bergamo Rossi, Daniele Ferrara "Domus Grimani” is the second chapter of an exhibition project, the result of the collaboration between the Veneto MiBACT Regional Museums Directorate and the Venetian Heritage Foundation, which celebrates the return of many classical sculptures belonging to Grimani at the museum of Palazzo Grimani after four centuries. If in 2019 the Tribuna room was rearranged, the room of wonders conceived and desired by Giovanni Grimani to exhibit the most important and valuable sculptures of his collection, the new exhibition consists of bringing back to the palace a group of sculptures that were originally located in the Sala del Doge, one of the most spectacular and evocative rooms of the palace. The Sala del Doge belongs to the last construction phase of the residence, which was completed by 1568. This space, which offsets the Tribuna, also commissioned by Giovanni Grimani, celebrates the figure of Antonio Grimani, the first doge of the family. The walls of the room are entirely decorated with stuccos framing ancient marble panels. Many of these rare and precious marbles come from quarries, in many cases extinct, in Turkey, Greece and North Africa that were used during the Roman era. Giovanni Grimani reused these ancient polychrome marbles as decorative elements. In the numerous niches, above the doors, on the fireplace and in the antechapel there were 28 classical sculptures, which will be relocated for this special occasion after 427 years.
