Vetro boemo: i grandi maestri

LE STANZE DEL VETRO

Topics:

The exhibition Vetro boemo: i grandi maestri, curated by Caterina Tognon and Sylva Petrová in collaboration with the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, is dedicated to Bohemian glass after the Second World War and features the work of six great masters of contemporary glass sculpture: Václav Cigler, Vladimír Kopecký, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, René Roubíček, Miluše Roubíčková.

In Bohemia, one of the regions of today's Czech Republic, great innovators emerged in the 12th century, expanding the landscape of European glass art. Throughout history, Bohemian glassmakers were constantly driven to innovate due to the fierce competition from other European regions, especially German and Italian, whose excellent production dominated the world markets in the decorative glass sector.

This historic competition came to an end in 1948 when communist rule triumphed in the then Czechoslovakia, closing national borders completely until 1989 to any form of free trade, movement, and communication with Western states. This naturally affected the glass scene, subjecting it to severe limitations. Nevertheless, the communist regime proudly exhibited the glass creations of Czech artists at major international exhibitions.

The exhibition presents the work of great artistic personalities who were born in the Czech lands in the early decades of the 20th century, witnessing their lives unfold alongside the turbulent transformations of Czechoslovak society. They experienced the largest European conflict, followed by a brief democratic period of only three years, which turned into the totalitarian communist regime in 1948. Finally, after 1989, the return of a democracy in line with European standards. It is admirable how the countless restrictions and denied freedoms to these artists could not halt their creativity or, more broadly, immobilize the positive evolution of the entire Czechoslovak art scene. In particular, these great masters were pioneers in the young discipline of "artist glass": their creations, enriched with the specific characteristics of glass, emerge as unique specimens and not as utilitarian objects, just as it has always been in painting and sculpture.

The exhibition is complemented by nineteen photographs by Josef Sudek (Kolín 1896–1976 Prague) from the series Glass Labyrinths, taken during the Vetro Boemo Contemporaneo exhibition organized in Prague in 1970 for the 5th congress of the AIHV – International Association for the History of Glass.
