On April 6, 1971, Igor Stravinskij died and by his will rests in the cemetery of San Michele in Venice. The Canticum Sacrum, or Canticle to Honour the Name of Saint Mark, was commissioned by the International Festival of Contemporary Music of Venice and was performed for the first time on September 13, 1956 in the St. Mark’s Basilica under the direction of Stravinskij himself and is dedicated "To the City of Venice, in praise of its Patron Saint, the Blessed Mark, Apostle”. It is a 17-minute choral-orchestral piece structured to the layout of the Basilica: five parts = five domes; the score is also adapted to the acoustics of the Basilica, eliminating the full orchestral sound and limiting the performance to the choir accompanied from time to time by a few instruments. The Superintendent of the Teatro La Fenice theatre, Fortunato Ortombina, after being contacted by the Biennale, agreed to have the piece performed by the orchestra and choir of the La Fenice theatre. Contacts with Monsignor Angelo Pagan (Archdeacon of St. Mark’s Basilica) and the First Procurator, Carlo Alberto Tesserin, have given their authorization to hold the event in the Basilica.
