Field Studies of the Venetian Lagoon

Topics:

Liz Nicol is working in collaboration with conservationist Jane da Mosto (scientific adviser for Venice in Peril). The project is a study of the salt tolerant plants that thrive in the harsh environment of the lagoon that is constantly under threat.
Different forms of photographic language and writing will be explored including the poetic and the evidential studies of plants and place.

Characteristically Liz works with a variety of different photographic processes including the cyanotype and analogue (black and white) photography, specific to this project is the process of working on location, making cyanotypes (blueprints) in situ, working with plants, sunlight and water, washing and making the cyanotypes on/in the lagoon. Specimens are also collected and brought into the darkroom for further observation.

The purpose of the collaboration is to promote knowledge of the lagoon environment - its past , present and future destiny - in an open , fair , active context.
