IL SORRISO DIVINO: COSTUMI DEL TEATRO NŌ AL MUSEO D’ARTE ORIENTALE

Museo d’Arte Orientale – Direzione regionale Musei Veneto, MiBACT

THE DIVINE SMILE: NŌ COSTUMES AT THE MUSEUM OF ORIENTAL ART

The collection of the Oriental Art Museum in Venice includes several nō costumes and instruments of the hayashi orchestra that accompanied the performances.  These items are extraordinary pieces of art that were purchased by Henry of Bourbon in 1889 in Japan. Gold, silk and lacquer would illuminate the sober theatre stage with glows of light, focusing attention on the composed gestures of the actors and the tragic tension of the representation. The exhibition, at Ca' Pesaro, will be an opportunity to enhance the heritage usually preserved in the Museum's repository. The exhibition will be coordinated with the events planned in the city during Homo Faber 2021 and will be an opportunity to invite scholars of the Nō theatre from the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, the University of Bologna, and the University of Leiden.
