Flavio Favelli

Il bello inverso

Topics:

Ca’ Rezzonico is taking part in the MUVE Contemporaneo project by hosting Flavio Favelli’s site-specific exhibition that traverses the museum’s monumental rooms. Favelli writes: “I think that despite its past history and its art locations, one of Venice’s most concentrated images was the huge, of the Coca-Cola logo photo in Piazza San Marco, perhaps from 1960, with its large letters made from birdseed and which was completed and executed by pigeons until it disappeared. Despite the date, it was a very audacious undertaking; almost offensive in its glaring display of a logo, shocking for Venice, that was placed sideways, almost attached like a bandage, almost like a stamp stuck on the city’s only piazza. Yet also polite, aware that it would be a short-lived encumbrance. Coca-Cola on Piazza San Marco was a challenge, as if this smart drink felt obliged to provoke the Serenissima in order to enjoy its weakness from the start. The contrasts of the modern and the new, the signs and advertisements that have gradually, subtly labelled the city, are more special than in other places; Santa Lucia station consoles with the only definitive arrival point situated away from the water of the lagoon. After all, an anti-mafia banner that recently appeared near the Rialto bridge read Venice is sacred”.
