Venice celebrates the art of Tintoretto

From 7th september 2018 to 6 January 2019

Topics:

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Venetian painter, Jacopo Tintoretto, (1519 - 1594), the City of Venice, the Fondazione Musei Civici (Civic Museums Foundation) of Venice, the National Gallery of Art of Washington, the Gallerie dell’Accademia (Academy Galleries), the Scuola Grande of San Rocco, the Patriarchal Curia of Venice, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism and the Superintendency for the Artistic and Historical Heritage of Venice, will give life to a major exhibition to pay tribute to one of the greatest artists of the sixteenth century.

From September 7 2018 to January 6 2019 Tintoretto's art will be celebrated in two prestigious venues, from the early success of his youth (Gallerie dell'Accademia) to the creative vitality of his later years (Palazzo Ducale), with an integrated itinerary of masterpieces coming from major private and public collections throughout the world, such as the Louvre, the Prado and the National Gallery of London.

From February 2019, the exhibition will be held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, an extremely exceptional event since it is the first presentation of artworks by the great Venetian artist in North America. The exhibition at Palazzo Ducale will be organised by Robert Echols and Frederick Ilchman.

The exhibition itinerary, which will be different and innovative compared to the one being held in the Spanish museum, about seventy paintings and a rare collection of drawings, which highlight Tintoretto’s creative process.

The Academy exhibition will, on the other hand, focus on the works of the young artist, known as "funambulist experimenter" up to the famous "Miracle of the slave" that were painted for the Scuola Grande of St. Mark’s.

Thanks to the support of Save Venice Inc., the event will also allow the scientific examination and restoration of 15 paintings in Venice to reveal their original colours.

The exhibitions will also offer the opportunity to look deeper into the life and works of the artist, who was called by Venetian doges and important figures to embellish the palaces and churches of the city with his extraordinary expressive talent, through a multiplicity of collateral events aimed at looking deeper into Tintoretto’s '500s in architecture, history, music, and fabrics.

The Tintoretto itineraries will be proposed to disseminate the awareness of his art in the city and educational projects for children.
