The image of Venice between reality and symbol

Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia

To celebrate Venice’s 1600th anniversary, the Gallerie dell'Accademia intend to offer one or more virtual itineraries/exhibitions of the collections focusing on the image of the City, between reality and symbol, alternating a selection of masterpieces that will help understand the architectural and urban planning evolution of the Venetian Republic - and the political choices underlying these transformations and images – as well as its capacity for civic and political self-representation through its symbols and allegories. In particular, the allegorical personification of Venice, with its multiple attributes, is familiar with transfigurations both on a religious key (Venice associated with the Virgin, also referring to the date of its foundation on the day of the Annunciation and to her Coronation as a divine confirmation of her temporal power), and symbolically (Venice as Justice, the Lion of St. Mark). Visitors will be able to follow this itinerary both during the visit to the museum, thanks to signs and additional information on the individual works, and remotely by going to the museum's website in the “itineraries” section. Last, but not least, an assessment will be made of the valorization of the Triptych of Justice by Jacobello del Fiore, with an explanatory panel and improved lighting.  The work, which dates back to 1421 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of Venice is exhibited in room I for visitors to see.
