Topics:

Vento di Venezia ASD and Compagnia della Vela are proud to host the second edition of the “Dragons in Venice Invitational” from Friday, September 30th to Sunday, October 2nd 2016.
This event will bring 8 of the world’s top Dragon Sailing Teams to Venice for 3 days of exhilarating match racing in 2 boat teams. The Dragon class is often referred to as the Kings’ class of sailing as it has attracted many top sailors as well as Royals to compete in these very elegant and yet highly technical keelboat.

A real ‘Thoroughbread of the Seas’, the Dragon was designed in 1926 by the Norwegian Johan Anker and was Olympic class from 1948 in London to 1972 in Munich. It is a very technical boat which requires high level of skills from its crew of 3 sailors. A perfect boat for an event on a demanding race course such as the San Marco Basin in Venice.

The idea for the “Dragons in Venice” event came from Klaus Diederichs (2013 Dragon World Champion) and was enthusiastically embraced by Alberto Sonino (CEO of Vento di Venezia) and Ugo Campaner (President of Compagnia della Vela).
Competitors for the Dragons in Venice Cup come from 7 different countries including Belgium, France, Hong Kong, Russia, UK, United Arab Emirates and Italy.
Amongst the teams competing for the beautiful Murano Glass Trophy created by Linea Murano Art are the current world’s number 6 and 7 ranked Dimitry Samokhin from Russia and Hendrik Witzmann from United Arab Emirates, the former World Champion Klaus Diederichs from UK, the reigning Asian Champion Tam Nguyen from Hong Kong and the 4 times Italian Champion and Venice local hero Giuseppe Duca, a true testimonial of the Compagnia della Vela. Part of the crews are also several Olympians including Andrey Kirilyuk on RUS76 and Diego Negri from Sanremo, who sails with team FEVER.

The regatta will be sailed out of Marina Vento di Venezia on Certosa Island and begins with a fleet race in the San Marco Basin on Friday, September 30th at 13:30, followed by a series of Round Robin team races. The intensive race schedule will bring each of the 8 teams to do battle against each other in two against two boat duels. The fast and close racing will continue for two further full days on Saturday and Sunday to determine the overall winner in time for the Prize Giving on Sunday afternoon at 16:00 on Certosa Island.

"This regatta represents an amazing show of tradition and elegance. The Compagnia della Vela therefore had no hesitation to support the idea by providing all its experience and logistical capacity to make it a unique event - commented Ugo Campaner, president of the Compagnia
della Vela - the traditional hull of the dragons and their riggs give the sailors the opportunity to show their technical skills and provide a magnificent sight to those who have the pleasure to watch them. It’s an event that I consider of excellence both for our club and for the entire city, a unique racing course where foreign sailors feel the thrill of racing in front of the Palazzo Ducale and Piazza San Marco. The event has the potential grow further involving more and more the city and those who love the sport of sailing
. "
Alberto Sonino (CEO of Vento di Venezia) says: “After the great success of the first edition, we are proud to organise this event for the second time. It shows the interest of top sailors from all over the world to come to Venice and race in the most classic of all sailing boats. Again,
Certosa, the Lagoon and Venice provide a perfect location to host such a high level sports and touristic event.

He continues: “ It is a privilege to work with first class sponsors like the renowned whisky brand of Glenfiddich and our two new partners: ASSIDUE-Agenzia UnipolSai, who have been supporting several major sailing events, and DFS who is opening the new prestige department store T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, which underlines this group’s affinity to Venice.” "It is fantastic to come back to Venice with the Dragons. The elegance of the boats and the beauty of the city are a perfect fit. I am looking forward to some close racing in front of this magnificent scenery", says former Dragon World Champion Klaus Diederichs.
