Church of San Zaccaria

Campo San Zaccaria
30122 Venezia VE

The church of San Zaccaria, whose superb 15th century façade is the work of Mauro Condussi, was reconstructed several times since its construction in 827 as a convent church. In the grassy square before it, we see architectonic fragments from the 13th and 14th centuries. It's a parish Church dedicated to Ss. Zaccaria and Atanasio. Numerous Doges are buried in the Church. The Church houses an Altarpiece (also called Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints), a painting by Giovanni Bellini, executed in 1505 and painting representing Adorazione dei Magi, Adorazione dei Pastori, Visita annuale del Doge alla Chiesa nel giorno di Pasqua.
In the Sacristy  we can find a painting by Giandomenico Tiepolo, Fuga in Egitto, and one by Tintoretto, Nascita del Battista (1563).
The pulpit was carved by Sebastiano Messenali (1752), and the small altar by Tullio Lombardo. There are also a St John the Evangelist writes the Apocalyptic Gospels by Matteo Ponzone. The interior is of the greatest interest as Gothic forms blend with Renaissance elements.
