Dancing Solar Flowers

Topics:

Alexandre Dang’s “Dancing Solar Flowers” will be displayed in the Cortile Grande of Ca' Foscari University for the entire period of the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

The idea comes from Alexandre Dang, a French environmental artist and engineer who is convinced of the need to raise awareness of the potential of renewable energy also in the multicolored “Biennale’s community”. Indeed, the Solar Flowers will be dancing in the Ca' Foscari’s main courtyard during the summer and the autumn.

The project, which was developed by the staff of Sustainable Ca' Foscari, consists in setting up a field of around 400 “Dancing Solar Flowers” in the Cortile Grande of Ca' Foscari University. The Flowers will dance from dawn to dusk. Each Flower contains a motor which functions thanks to a photovoltaic solar cell. The cell converts light into electricity that powers the motor and makes it possible for the flower to move constantly, as long as there is light.

These Flowers trigger surprise, wonder and questioning and thus bring the spectators to think about the possibilities (too often ignored) that renewable sources of energy can offer.
