If you're curious you can read the history of the Byron Cup!

June 15th 1818 Lord Byron, the Cavalier Angelo Mengaldo (a good swimmer and a former soldier in Napoleon's army who boasted of his exploits, particularly of swimming the Danube under Austrian fire) the British Consul Richard Belgrave Hoppner and Scott Alexander, a Scottish gentleman residing in Venice, enter the water at the Lido deciding to swim up to the Ponte della Paglia in Riva dei Schiavoni. Only Byron arrived to the finish line, others drop out halfway through. Mengaldo then asks the rematch with a race from Lido up to the Rialto Bridge. The challenge is held on June 25th (some say 18th) and Scott also joins the challengers.
Byron leads the race but he doesn’t stop at Rialto and continues along the Grand Canal to Santa Chiara and then swims back to Ca’ Mocenigo, after 3 hours and 45 minutes.
After the challenge was founded the Byron Swimming race, later called Lord Byron Cup, established in 1905 by the Bucintoro Rowing Club Cup to inaugurate the first swimming school in Venice.
Byron The Cup, initially was held in coincidence with the Venice Biennale, from the Lido to St. Lucia. After World War II the race was halved (arriving at the Punta della Dogana), and in the mid-50s, was suspended for water pollution.

Byron, George Gordon (London 1788-Missolungi 1824), English poet and aristocrat, came to Venice in 1816 and stood for three years (1816-1819). He became a legendary figure for the Venetians for plunging into the lagoon for going back home or to meet his teenager lover in the building in front of Ca 'Mocenigo, or for his habit to ride on the Lido, where the Austrian governor had allowed him to set up a horses stable, at the Jewish cemetery. His gondolier Tita used to bring him there, to ride one of its four horses and go up to Malamocco and back.
