Torre Massimiliana
The old, imposing Torre Massimiliana (Maximilian Tower) that dominates the beach is the only example of a cylindrical fortified "Maximilian tower" in Italy. Named in honour of Archduke Maximilian of Austria who took refuge here during the turbulence in 1848, it was part of the ancient area along the 'line of fire' that once protected the lagoon.
Surrounded by a water-filled moat, and by an irregular polygonal embankment, it defended the southernn shoreline of the S.Erasmo area, with its entire legth facing the mouth of the Lido harbour. It was used as an antiaircraft battery during the Second World War, before being occupied by German troops after 1943. At present it becomes exhibition and museum space, and a meeting place for associations.
No longer a military domain, the impressive Austrian fortress restored by the Venice Water Authority is back in the hands of the city and the island, and will open to the public during summer:
