Screening "V. S. Gaitonde"

Topics:

The Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi hosts the screening of V. S. Gaitonde (1995), by Sunil Kaldate, organised by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

As critic Holland Cotter has stated, V. S. Gaitonde was an artist “who looked westward, eastward, homeward and inward to create an intensely personalized version of transculturalism….” Sunil Kaldate’s film, V. S. Gaitonde (color video, with sound, 27 min., 1995) constitutes one of the few remaining visual traces of this reclusive modernist artist’s life and milieu. Gaitonde never addresses the camera. We see him in his single-room rental apartment-cum-studio (barsati) in Nizamuddin, New Delhi, in the mid-1990s. Refusing to be disturbed or interrupted in any way by the presence of a film crew or recording apparatus, Gaitonde is consciously oblivious to these extraneous activities and movements, which do not belong to the natural order of things. The artist’s process of painting is never revealed or discussed. Rather, we enter a private space that is utterly frugal and unkempt, or rather, an interiorized world.

Thursday 1 October at 5.30pm, Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi
The film will be screened in the presence of the director.
